Reflecting on 2024: A Pivotal Year for Wisconsin

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the events, achievements, and challenges that defined 2024 in Wisconsin. From political shifts to cultural milestones, this year brought a whirlwind of activity that shaped the state’s identity and future. Whether it was legislative actions, spirited community events, or the ever-evolving cannabis industry, 2024 proved to be a transformative year for the Badger State.

Join me as we dive into a month-by-month journey through the highlights and headlines that made this year one for the history books. Here’s your 2024 Year in Review for Wisconsin.

January: Republicans unveil the most controversial and restrictive medical cannabis bill to date.

February 2024: Analysis of the Republican Medical Bill, In-depth profile on Republican Medical Bill Co-sponsor and Committee Chair Clint Moses (R), New Maps and Incumbent Overlaps created chaos, Senator Agard will not seek re-election.

March 2024: Kenosha Residents for Cannabis Reform publishes spring candidate guide, 2024 fall election coverage begins covering rematches and ‘pot’ential close races.

April 2024: Many competitive races are uncovered to have clear differences in candidates stances on cannabis reform.

May 2024: Uncontested races, we already know who won some seats.

June 2024: Primary races are so critical to change and I covered so many of the races so early! Miller Amendment introduced as part of the Federal Farm Bill.

July 2024: More primary races covered with emphasis on Republicans. Democrats state platform includes legalization.

August 2024: ACLU publishes candidates questionnaire answers. Press Release for 2024 Election Coverage. The Fall Primary Election results set the stage for the general election in November.

September 2024: Early signs indicate cannabis reform not a major issue for main stream media as Wisconsin Eye Candidate interviews do not ask any cannabis questions. I also examined the Senate Districts not up for election in 2024 and what might be in the works for the 2026 election.

October 2024: The Pizza, Pot and Politics Event was highly attended by both the general public and candidates! Thank you event sponsors. Assembly Representative Lee Snodgrass received cannabis leadership award.

November 2024: General Election of 2024 and three (3) races decided by less than 420 votes, many others were very close also! Republicans retain control of both houses and swiftly elect their leadership for the 2025-26 session.

December 2024: The 15th Anniversary of the last time the Wisconsin Assembly held a public hearing on medical cannabis. The State Public Defenders Office has a leadership change, but still calls for decriminalization in the budget. Frank Buress retires, we thank him for his endless advocacy. Melissa Agard is honored for her high level of efforts with a “Cannabis Legalization Leader Award”.

Looking ahead, 2025 offers new opportunities to build on the successes of the past year while tackling the challenges that lie ahead.
