Senator Olsen vs David Eiler: Senate District 14 please Vote for Dave Eiler in the August 14th Primary Election
Incumbent state Sen. Luther Olsen, R-Ripon, and challenger David Eiler of Brandon have differing views on the issues as they prepare to face each other for the 14th Senate District Republican nomination.
Many of you recall the semi-support Luther Olsen had shown during the 2009-2010 legislative cycle. During the 2012 Recall Election against Democrat Fred Clark, Olsen had a chance to put himself on the record with support, but failed to do so. If re-elected, it seems unlikely that Olsen will sponsor or co-sponsor any future marijuana legislation, but is still most likely a “yes” should pending legislation hit his desk for a vote. But as politicians go…he could just be lying.

Does his competitor Republican Dave Eiler have what it takes to win against such an entrenched incumbent like Olsen? We will only know after the votes are counted this coming Tuesday. As a hemp cannabis activist speaking, Eiler deserves the vote. Olsen had his chance and blew it, let’s face it… Olsen blows smoke on the marijuana issue.Eiler on the other hand was very matter of fact on the subject. Immediately upon questioning Eiler as to his support of marijuana reform, he recalled stories of the days when the Senate District 14 in which he seeks to represent was covered in Industrial Hemp, which he supports without a problem. The compassionate use of medical cannabis is also an issue that candidate Eiler supports.
My conversation with him indicates a common sense approach to the entire issue, even drawing a comment from Eiler that marijuana reform means jobs, improved public safety and tax revenue. It seems he was more eager to accept total decriminalization as a more viable option than the continued prohibition of this plant.
My feeling is that Dave Eiler would be fair on the issue and certainly be open to sponsoring or co-sponsoring future legislation on the issue. The man has my vote in the upcoming primary election and I urge all voters, Democratic, Republican, Libertarians and Independents in the Senate District 14 to cast their vote for David Eiler also.
The Republican primary will take place Tuesday, Aug. 14, with the polls open at from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. To view a map of Senate district 14 click here and to find your polling place, click here.
The winner will face Democrat Margarete Worthington — the only Democrat running — during the Tuesday, Nov. 6 general election.
