Organizers of the recent “Vigil for Victims of Medical Marijuana Prohibition” held in Madison should be proud of the continued efforts to bring awareness to this public health issue.
As we have learned in the past, the use of criminal laws on hemp cannabis will continue to create victims unless we stand up now. Public health issues, such as medical hemp cannabis should be treated as such. Our doctors and patients should have every piece of arsenal they can be equipped with in fighting the “war on sickness“. We need to take the sick, dying and disabled off the battlefield and we need to do so before any other victims are created by the vicious cycle we have come to know as the “drug war gravy train“.
During the memorial several patients, activists and friends who have passed away were remembered in a variety of ways. Being victimized by unjust laws throughout their lives, medical patients often faced a form of discrimination as well as illness. Keeping marijuana from patients who find therapeutic relief in using it seems very unconstitutional and imposing penalties on those who use it medicinally seems cruel and unusual given the current and past landscape of The United States of America.
Victory was found Monday night in a variety of ways. A joint venture of several organizations, activists, supporters and supporting pedestrians created an awareness campaign that carried on for hours. Along with featured presentations and speakers, citizens on the street found singing, music, poetry, signs and literature.
The fellowship from new members who traveled from all over the state to join our growing family needs also be recognized as a victory in itself. Overcoming fears of speaking publicly on this issue are fading fast as public support for medical cannabis reaches new highs. These new members joining the fight each day will be leading us to victory tomorrow as we demand the reform of marijuana laws.
