The Topix Online Poll: Do you support the legalization of marijuana?

The popular website Topix (http://www.topix.com/) is currently discussing and polling the United States on the legalization of marijuana.

The question is, Do you support the legalization of marijuana?

Currently as of October 17, 2010, the site has 6,663 cities reporting, 52,225 total comments on the conversation of cannabis.

A total of 40,285 votes have been cast so far in favor of legalization of marijuana.  Opposing the legalization question is currently 9,673 which results in a approximately 76% responding to the poll favor legalization of marijuana.

Wisconsin currently has 151 cities that have participated.  The results so far are higher than the national support percentages.  At the time of this article, 548 Wisconsinites have expressed support of legalization of marijuana, while only 88 votes have been cast against legalization.  The support in Wisconsin equates to approximately 84%.

Locally for the Wisconsin State Assembly District 41, the district had six (6) cities represented.  The overall support for the area has slightly higher than the national average, coming in with approximately 77% of those polled supporting legalization of marijuana.

The Topix poll and responses included Berlin, Wautoma, Poy Sippi, Markesan, Ripon and Green Lake.  Additionally, the Ripon Commonwealth Press conducted a poll in July of 2010 to their readership both on line and in print.  The poll conducted by the Ripon Commonwealth Press could be considered more detailed, as the poll touched on medical marijuana and industrial hemp, as well as full legalization.  The results directly from the Ripon area, known nationally as the “Birthplace of the Republican Party” and largest city in the 41st State Assembly Districtwere surprising to most.
