Scanning the news this morning I read National NORML report via the NORML BLOG that the Marijuana Policy Project is declaring victory in Arizona. The NORML BLOG also gave a recap of the new medical marijuana laws that Arizona would utilize and an updated graphic of current medical marijuana laws in The Marijuana States of America.

The Marijuana Policy Project is declaring victory and that Arizona will become the 15th medical marijuana state.  The newest medical marijuana state will now protect registered patients from arrest and provide a dispensary system for them to acquire their medicine.  Patients will not be permitted to grow their own medicine at home if they live within 25 miles of a dispensary.  Patients will be allowed to possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana acquired no more often than every 14 days when purchased from the dispensaries.  Patients will not be able to sell marijuana to the dispensaries that are required to grow their own cannabis within highly-secured facilities.  There can only be a maximum of one dispensary for every ten pharmacies, except when to allow at least one per county.  The complete text is available from the Arizona Medical Marijuana Policy Project.

I received the message from Rob Kampia, Executive Director of the Marijuana Policy Project and also noticed an update on the MPP Facebook Page.  Another victory for marijuana activists and MPP as Arizona becomes the 15th medical marijuana state.  The MPP alert reads in part:

Although there are still about 10,000 votes left to be counted, our lead of more than 4,000 votes makes us 100 percent confident in announcing…

Arizona is now the 15th medical marijuana state!

This fall, more than 1.7 million Arizona voters mailed in ballots and turned out to support Proposition 203, a ballot initiative that would end the arrest and imprisonment of patients for following their doctor’s advice. While it seemed as if the initiative had fallen short on election night, it garnered enough support from late mail-in votes and provisional ballots to produce a victory! This is a historic day for Arizonans, who have made a significant contribution toward ending marijuana prohibition in this country.

The Marijuana Policy Project did help during the Wisconsin 2009-2010 legislation by testifying at the joint hearing for Assembly Bill 554 and Senate Bill 368, publicly known as the “Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act”.  We thank them for their assistance during the public hearing in December 2009 and look forward to seeing MPP back in Wisconsin soon.

Rob Kampia goes on to thank all those who donated and supported the marijuana projects this year, especially the people outside Arizona that made the victory possible.  It seems that this organization is choosing the states and ballot initiatives wisely the work in, enacting 5 out of the last 7 state medical marijuana laws.

But this is also a time to give thanks to the people outside of Arizona who made this victory possible. Only through the generous donations of our members was MPP able put over half-a-million dollars worth of resources into helping Prop. 203 succeed.

People across the country gave money to support an initiative that may never directly affect them because they know that attacking marijuana prohibition on every front is crucial to the long-term success of our movement. Thanks to those donors, MPP was able to do things like draft the initiative, pay for the signature drive to place Prop. 203 on the ballot, put consultants on the ground, and much, much more!

While great news, this isn’t unexpected. MPP has been primarily responsible — through lobbying and ballot initiatives — for enacting five out of the last seven state medical marijuana laws!
