AD 66: Incumbent Neubauer (D) vs DeGroot (R)

| | |

The 66th Assembly District is located in southeast Wisconsin, the district comprises the southeast corner of Racine County, including the south side of the city of Racine, most of the village of Mount Pleasant, and the villages of Sturtevant and Elmwood Park. The district also contains Johnson Wax Headquarters, Regency Mall, and the Foxconn in Wisconsin campus.

Greta Neubauer (D-Racine)

Elected to Assembly in January 2018 special election. Reelected since November 2018. Leadership positions: Minority Leader 2023, 2021 (effective 1/10/22).

As a freshman assembly rep, she did not co-sponsor any marijuana legislation her first session.  Although she made public statements about the marijuana reform in the budget, her statements did not touch on adult use/recreational marijuana.

Her district showing 85% support for medical and 59% for recreational marijuana in the 2018 referendums.

In 2020-22 legislation session, she did co-sponsor adult use/recreational marijuana.

and again in 2023-34 she was a co-sponsor of adult use marijuana legalization legislation.

There are 99 state Assembly seats and 16 state Senate seats on the ballot this November. The ACLU of Wisconsin sent a questionnaire to all candidates and published their answers on August 21st.

We are not surprised that she answered YES to the ACLU question: Do you support the legalization, regulation, and taxation of marijuana for recreational use by adults 21 and over in Wisconsin? And she added this statement onto her ACLU questionnaire:

I was proud to join our caucus in supporting legislation to permit medical and recreational use of marijuana in Wisconsin. This is an economic, civil rights, and fairness issue. By legalizing marijuana the state could bring in new tax revenue, stop unnecessarily incarcerating our citizens, and begin to right the wrongs of the failed war on drugs.

On 4/20/2024 she had this to say:

David DeGroot (R-Mount Pleasant)

25+ Years as a Small Business Owner, Action HomeBuyers, Inc.
Village President of Mount Pleasant since 2017

There are no public statements that I could find from DeGroot on the subject by conducting a quick search. He will have a hard time topping the Democrat anyways in this competitive, but very likely Democrat district.

I will provide you additional 2024 Wisconsin State Election coverage throughout the campaign season. This next election is extremely important for marijuana reform and I will continue to bring you information as more candidates make their political moves.

In the event that we end up with divided government in the 2024-25 legislation session, the official formation of The Wisconsin Cannabis Caucus would be a must first step towards reform. The official establishment of this Caucus will represent the growing, bipartisan support in Wisconsin.

Although session as ended we still urge you to contact your elected officials. The top four action alerts are still functionable on The Wisconsin Cannabis Activist Action Network for you immediate use.
