The Fox Valley American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has spearheaded an idea and helped put together an expert panel for the discussion on the question of “What about legalizing marijuana for Wisconsin?”.  The Fox Valley ACLU will moderate the forum that is to be held at the City of Oshkosh Public Library on Wednesday February 13th, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30pm.

Obviously these events need to be funded and we need your help to bring a special presenter and panel member to the forum. With the introduction of several pieces of legislation in high hopes for Wisconsin and media interest at a high point, we hope you can help give the community something they deserve, a high dosage of L.E.A.P. (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition).

Please donate today to help secure the final funding needed to bring this event together.  The Fox Valley ACLU and Mark from TaxThis.Org have already funded a majority of the costs.  Any donation does help and we hope everyone can spare $4.20.  We plan to be out in the fields often and love to have the cops and attorneys from LEAP there with us.  Amounts raised in excess of what is needed for this event will be carried over to bring L.E.A.P. to Wisconsin again.

We have been honored and educated by James Gierach of LEAP in the past and look forward to your help to bring him to this event, to help bring him to our community. And even after the event is over, more awareness will certainly be needed. In addition to presenting at our events, Mr. Gierach has continued to write op ed letters, mentor/inspire activists, speak with elected officials and communicate with local law enforcement agencies of the communities he visits in Wisconsin.

As a chapter, we would consider funding a LEAP speaker and securing funding to bring a LEAP speaker, specifically Jim Gierach to testify at our public hearings to be a high priority. Please donate today.

James Gierach

James E. Gierach is a former Assistant State’s Attorney of Cook County, municipal attorney, Village prosecutor, and general practitioner. He was the youngest delegate elected to write Illinois’ Constitution in 1970, a former candidate for Cook County State’s Attorney and Illinois governor, raising drug policy and prison issues. One newspaper called him, “Illinois’ premier conscientious objector to the war on drugs.”

In James’ view, the War on Drugs not only doesn’t work but is also the heart of most American crises including violent crime, property crime, gangs, guns, prisons, student dropout rates, corruption, overdose deaths, addition, disease, trade imbalance and the frequent inability of governments at every level to pay the bills. “Ironically,” James says, “the war on drugs was put in place to save our kids from drugs and make our streets safer, but ending prohibition is what will truly accomplish these goals.”

James has spent more than twenty years fighting drug prohibition as a candidate for Cook County State’s Attorney and Illinois governor in primary elections, and as an author, speaker, and attorney. He has discussed and debated drug-policy issues on television, radio and in front of hundreds of audiences, appearing alongside the former head of the DEA, presiding judges, chiefs of police, and drug advisors to the White House. He currently lives in the Chicago area.
