Marijuana Ordinance Moves to La Crosse City Council

| |

La Crosse, Wisconsin (WXOW)-La Crosse City Council members are split on a proposal to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.

A committee voted seven to seven last night which means the measure moves to the full council without a recommendation.

The ordinance would allow officers to issue a ticket for a first offense possession of up to seven grams rather than arresting them for drug possession.

The La Crosse Police Department opposes the measure.

We spend extensive time going into the schools and teaching kids the dangers of that initial drug use and the importance of staying away from drugs as much as they can and we think that reducing the penalties associated with marijuana to a municipal ordinance sends the wrong message to kids,” said Captain Jason Melby of the La Crosse Police Department.

Last year, the council approved but the mayor vetoed a similar proposal.
