AMERICANS FOR SAFE ACCESS Alive and Strong in Wisconsin

American’s for Safe Access created a new Chapter in Wisconsin. Americans for Safe Access is the largest organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists and concerned citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis. We engage a multifaceted strategy of public education, impact litigation, grassroots development and advocacy, media campaigns and direct support services.

“With the development of new medical cannabis laws, it was time to organize a chapter here in Wisconsin” says Bunny Hethcox chairman of the Wisconsin Chapter. “Legalization of medical cannabis does not have a political line to cross. Both Republicans and Democrats see the need to legalize cannabis for patients who need this medicine.”

Americans for Safe Access holds their monthly meeting the second Saturday of every Month at 1:00 P.M. in Columbus, Wisconsin. Ms Hethcox states “We are delighted that the community has shown an outpouring of acceptance of medical cannabis. More and more people are seeing the need to offer safe and legal access to their medicine. It no longer is the stigma of the 60s “pothead”, research is showing that cannabis holds real medicinal value.”

Donald I. Abrams, MD, is a leading expert on the use of medical marijuana for the treatment of AIDS. He has seen and experienced its benefits firsthand through his involvement with some of the first clinical marijuana trials to ever be conducted on patients with the painful, life-threatening disorder.  Dr.Abrams is a cancer and integrative medicine specialist at the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Mount Zion. Abrams provides integrative medicine consultations for cancer patients and has completed research in complementary and alternative therapies including mind-body treatments, botanical therapies, medical use of marijuana and traditional Chinese medicine herbal therapies.

In addition to his role at the Osher center, he is chief of Hematology and Oncology at San Francisco General Hospital. Abrams, who has been in the forefront of HIV/AIDS research and treatment, stepped down from the HIV Clinic at San Francisco General Hospital in August 2006 to devote more time to integrative medicine and oncology. He is an executive committee member of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and is co-chair of of the center’s program in Symptom Management, Palliative Care and Survivorship. In 2004, he completed an associate fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona.

The Wisconsin Chapter of the ASA will have Dr. Donald Abrams as a speaker later in the year. “We hope to have him speak at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and present his latest studies.” says Ms Hethcox. “We also will be offering the public free admission to watch the movie called ‘What if Cannabis Cured Cancer?’. It is an amazing documentary that everyone should see”.
